3 things you didn’t know about… Johannesburg

1. The city, known to many as ‘Joburg’, has another nickname; ‘Egoli’, which means ‘place of gold’. The settlement in Johannesburg began in 1886 when gold was discovered and soon saw thousands flocking there in search of fortune. Forty percent of the world’s gold has been found in this area on which the city was build.

2. Local dishes include…Boerewors (traditional South Afrian sauages), Frikkadel (baked meatballs), Koeksisters (syrup coated doughnuts), Morogo (leafy vegetables know as African Spinach), Pap (a type of porridge) and Skop (goat’s head)!

3. Johannesburg has approximately 130 venues capable of hosting an array of events, including four large conference centres hosting between 4,500 and 12,000 delegates, including the Sandton Convention Centre.
