With the meteoric rise of Facebook, apps like Instagram and the very recent iPhone 6S launch with advanced camera technology, taking photos has become an unrivaled trend with almost everyone uploading photos onto their social media every single day.
This increased popularity has therefore seen event photography go from strength to strength. But, just like any kind of art, event photography requires more than the basic knowledge of point-and-shoot cameras. Here, we share some tips that can help you capture great photos like a professional event photographer…
Take pre-event shots
Although the most important photos of the meeting or event will be the ones showing the number of attendees, an empty hall with the event setup is a good way to start. As an event photographer, you must be there ahead of time by at least two hours. This should give you time to capture shots of the room prior to the arrival of your guests.
However, Digital Photography School noted that you must not overshoot or undershoot during an event. Take enough photos that truly capture the essence of the gathering, both posed and candid. It’s your responsibility also to take notes of who you have photographed to avoid going to the same group and for documentation purposes.
Presence of mind
An important factor to consider during events is to KEEP YOUR FOCUS. Be alert at all times. As the photographer, you must capture the “fun” factor of the gathering, but you must also be alert about all the changes and sequence of the event. Be quick in capturing images, without sacrificing the quality of each shot. Most of the photographers we know are always going around the area to get the best shot and present each activity as they go.
Use your smartphone
Even professional photographers are leveraging mobile devices when taking images at events, especially since they are able to edit pictures and post them online instantly via the same device. It can also be noted that smartphones are now built with powerful cameras and lenses. One of the newest handsets today is the iPhone 6s Plus, which comes with the advanced iSight technology, built-in editing filters and a 12-megapixel rear camera. Some smartphones are built for mobile photography like the Nokia handset that comes with 41-megapixel. But, the important factor here is mostly concerning the smartphone’s capability to help you multitask by taking those great images, editing them in real-time, and posting them online quickly. With the help of many editing and photography apps out there, your smartphone will be an extremely important tools at your next event.
Set your camera depending on the event
As the official photographer, you must be able to apply the basics in photography in terms of framing and lighting. For creative shots, apply the rule of thirds and you will be certain that your images will come out great. Lighting is another important aspect you need to understand. There are various types of events and different places that come with varied lighting. You have indoor gatherings; with outdoor events you’ll likely contend with more natural light, while there are also concerts that come with bright strobe lights. It’s important to set your camera accordingly depending on the event’s location and lighting to produce great images. Take pre-event test photos to get the right lighting and setting for the event. Remember, being there at the event area ahead of time will definitely pay off.
Technology has made great progress in the photography industry, especially through social media that now allows event organisers to post photos and updates online regarding their events in real-time.
